Art 21 | Kara Walker
Kara Walker is an African American female artist who explores complex themes through her work. She is known for her large scale silhouette installations. The work explores the intersections of race, gender and sexuality through silhouetted figures. Her silhouettes appear a reflection of the darkness associated with racism and the darkness within her soul. The result is a theatrical narrative that encompasses the viewer. The figures interact with one another in often violent and sexual ways.
In the classroom: Walker's work could be used to facilitate a complex discussion about racial representation in the art world. A lesson plan could incorporate the discussion of misconceptions. Students could reflect on how they feel as though their inner self concept connects or disconnects with how others perceive them.
