Personal Transition Silhouettes | ​ A lesson for 8th Grade

Central Focus (Big Idea): Students will explore concepts of personal transition, and learn that their unique perspectives can be conveyed through nonobjective representations using line, shape, color, other elements and principles of design to create abstract painting that they will turn into negative space silhouettes.

Essential Questions:
-What does nonobjective mean?
-How do abstract artworks convey emotions and ideas?
-How can you express emotions nonobjectively through art?
-How can various elements and principles of art be used to convey something nonobjectively?
-What are some ways that the artists from the abstract expressionist, modernist, and postmodern movements used abstract art?
-What are some words to describe transition in your life?
-How does discussing transition help us experience change?
-How can you convey emotions and ideas associated with a transition in a nonobjective manner?
-How does the act of creating a silhouette reflect the concept of transition?
